Welcome to MUSIC-IN-SCHOOLS at... !
I look forward to working with your children and developing their creative potential through music study! SIGN UP HERE
Here's a few highlights of our program:
- We welcome students aged 6 and up. Students can sign up at any time during the school year.
- Our tuition is in line with other offerings in the area, but, unlike others, it includes 1st year's sheet music in a binder, saving you the extra expense. Additionally, we offer a 10% sibling discount, and NO registration, materials, or recital fees.
- PIANO: $33/weekly for a 30min. individual lesson or two 15min. mini-lessons (Kindergarten only) + included sheet music.
- STRINGS (violin, cello, guitar): $33/weekly for 30min. individual lesson + sheet music. (violin or cello must rent instrument)
- MONTHLY TUITION IS PAYABLE IN FULL, DIRECTLY TO THE TEACHER, AT THE FIRST LESSON OF EACH MONTH using Zelle or Pay. You can use your bank's mobile app to make payments to my phone number (847) 877-0846
- lessons will be discontinued if tuition is not paid at the start of each month.. Tuition payments must be current in order to keep the lesson time reserved - NO EXCEPTIONS!
- there is a 10% sibling discount for two siblings at $60/week and three siblings at $90/week.. The sibling discount also applies to any student taking two lessons weekly (the European/Asian model) , or two lessons on two instruments (eg. violin+piano, piano+guitar).
- make-up lessons will be attempted for lessons missed due to school tests or field trips only. If make-ups are not workable, a lesson credit will be applied toward the next month's tuition.
- as with other activities, there is NO CREDIT/REFUND for missed lessons due to student's sickness, injuries, vacation during school time, etc. Make-up lessons will be attempted, but cannot be guaranteed.
- In the case of serious illness/injury that would cause the student to miss lessons for an extended period of time, special arrangements can be made after being notified. Online lessons are possible.
- If the teacher is notified that the lessons are discontinued before the end of the month, the remaining balance cannot be reimbursed.
- If desired, summer lessons can continue at my Park Ridge studio, at the same rates (two lessons a month possible, etc.). It is ideal not to lose the leading momentum.
POLICIES
- All our activities are subject to the school calendar, policies, rules, and regulations.
- Inherent in all individual music instruction there is minimal physical contact. This is strictly restricted to the fingers and hand of the student, Any and all such occasional physical contact is limited to temporary tapping and re-positioning of fingers or hand, and involves no rubbing, holding, squeezing, etc. Most of the time this contact is made using a Starbuck straw :)
- Please be aware that learning to play a musical instrument requires a basic level of cognitive development, physical dexterity, control, and coordination, mental focus, self-awareness, self-control, analytical and sequential reasoning, basic literacy (alphabet A-G, numbers 1-10, left/right hand). This is particularly true of strings (violin, cello, guitar), which is why the piano is the easiest instrument to learn/play.
- Students perform solos at least twice yearly, and in groups (violin and cello only), in the school Auditorium.
- For violin or cello, the Orchestra experience (morning Group Class) is only offered as part of signing up for weekly individual lessons, and cannot be joined separately. (availability TBD)
- Problems that may arise concerning your child’s interest or progress should not be discussed in the presence of the child. Please discuss your observations and share feedback with the teacher privately. We appreciate and value your concerns and involvement. Open communication between us is essential for a good music education for your child.
- All sheet music and other materials are and remain the intellectual property of their respective copyright holders, and are not to be shared, stored, or duplicated, either physically or electronically, outside of the Music-In-Schools program, at any time, and under no circumstances, without prior written approval. This covers resources attached to emails received from the program director and teacher.
- All students are encouraged to attend musical performances and maximize their potential, resources, opportunities, and time.
HOME PRACTICE
- Consistent and attentive practice is essential to students' progress and success as a musician. Practice times can vary depending on the student's level and their commitment. Please speak with the teacher about formulating the best practice plan. Generally, students up to 5th grade are required to practice a minimum of 5 days a week (15-30 minutes each time, depending on student's age, experience, and commitment). Messing around with the instrument does not count as practicing.
- One of the great benefits of learning an instrument is that it can teach a person attention to detail, perseverance, grit, self-control, and patience. Nowhere are these benefits more obvious than in one’s daily practice. In fact, a great deal of learning is done away from the teacher - in the practice sessions at home, in the days between lessons! We play the way we practice...
Students and parents agree to:
- practice at home as indicated by the teacher (10-15 minutes 5-6 times weekly is a good base)
- keep nails trimmed and hands clean
- bring sheet music binder and/or books to all lessons, classes, and concerts
- take care of the instrument and treat it with respect (this includes the bow, case, and accessories)
- attend all lessons and group classes except in the case of illness, injury, or family emergencies
- demonstrate a serious and respectful approach to music-making, learning and performance opportunities
